Attic Access Panels
For heating and cooling of your home make sure that all attic access panels are fully in place and check to make sure that there is insulation placed on top of the panel(s) to add to the insulation of the attic. In most homes this is one of the most common locations for heat loss. Heat rises and the second floor ceiling panel is a direct route for loss of heat from the home. Applying rigid insulation to the back side of the panel is a better way to insure that the insulation is in place when the panel is dropped down into place. It is recommended that no less than 6” inches minimum of rigid insulation is attached by means of caulking the panels to one another and to the lid. Please note: Do not use construction adhesive because the chemical properties of construction adhesive can brake down the rigid insulation products
There are products available that create a greater effective barrier for insulation properties for attic access panels. Some of these products would require reframing and / or drywall repairs depending on the existing size of the attic access panels.
